What is Accutane?

Accutane is a prescription retinoid medication designed to treat severe acne. Cheryll can prescribe this medicine when other medications haven’t worked well enough, or you can’t tolerate them. It eliminates symptoms of acne, reducing the risk of scarring. Accutane has helped many people struggling with acne achieve the clear skin they deserve.

What does Accutane treat?

People with severe acne could be candidates for Accutane, particularly if they’ve tried other treatments without success. Signs of acne include frequent:

  • Blackheads
  • Whiteheads
  • Red, tender bumps
  • Pimples
  • Nodules
  • Pus-filled lumps

When not treated, acne can scar. See Cheryll at the first sign of ongoing or severe acne.

Acne risk factors include hormone fluctuations during pregnancy and puberty, a family history of acne, pressure or friction against the skin, and greasy, oily substances.

Is Accutane right for me?

Cheryll examines your skin and reviews your symptoms, medical history, and goals to determine if you’re a candidate for Accutane. She might first recommend other treatments like over-the-counter products, altered skincare regimens, lifestyle changes, light therapy, or chemical peels.

Patients 12 and older can be candidates for Accutane, but pregnant women should avoid the treatment.

What should I expect when taking Accutane?

Take Accutane exactly as instructed to ensure that it works as designed. You’ll swallow the capsule with a full glass of water at the same time every day. If it upsets your stomach, take Accutane with food. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose at the usual time. Avoid taking two doses at once to make up for a missed one.

Protect your skin from the sun, and don’t use tanning beds when taking Accutane. It makes you more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause skin cancer.

Tell Cheryll about other medications and dietary supplements you’re taking. Accutane could adversely interact with some of them. Let her know if you develop an allergic reaction or other side effects. Follow up with Cheryll in person or virtually to ensure that your acne treatment is effective.
